In a country responsible for 17% of maternal deaths worldwide, Assam has the highest maternal mortality ratio in India. However, 90% of maternal deaths that occur in Assam and elsewhere in India are preventable– as they are most often caused by delays in seeking and obtaining healthcare. Expanding access to appropriate and timely medical treatment could save up to 50,000 women’s lives per year in India.
Since 2013, Nazdeek, in collaboration with their local partner PAJHRA, have been fighting to expand and protect women’s access to maternal health in Assam. Together with community activists, we have secured better health services for mothers.
